Zelma Harman Hogue

January 31, 1913 — June 4, 2013

Mrs. Zelma Harman Hogue, 100, of Richards passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at the Sheridan of Navasota. A visitation will be held Friday, June 7th from 6:00-8:00 p.m at Nobles Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will be Saturday, June 8th at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Richards with the Rev. Reagan Cooksey & Rev. Eric Dehmer officiating. Interment will follow in Bays Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.

The oldest of five sisters, Zelma was born in the small community of Bays Chapel, Texas on January 31, 1913 to Nathaniel Byrd Harman & Mattie Mae Keisler. She graduated from high school in Richards in 1931 and was a lifelong resident of Richards where she operated a beauty shop for over 20 years. She met her husband, Charles, when he came from Oklahoma to be a cook in the CCC (Tree Army). They were married on October 4, 1935. Before his death in 1984 she & Charles loved to spend time going fishing in their RV and playing dominos.

Zelma was a woman of many talents who loved craft projects and was an excellent seamstress. She was an avid reader and an artist who had many of her paintings displayed in her home. She always had a beautiful yard and garden from which she made jams, jellies and canned many vegetables. She also worked as a school bus driver, election judge for Grimes County & taught Sunday school for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of almost 50 years, Charles H. (Red) Hogue; sisters, Pauline Huff, Iva Lockett & Nataline Coleman; son-in-law, H. E. (Buddy) Wells & grandsons, Jody Glynn Burnett & Eric Keith Wells.

She is survived by son & daughter-in-law, Charles Dale & Ann Hogue of Houston; daughters & son-in-law, Lynda Wells of West Sandy & Nita & Richard Smith of Houston; sister, Beth Garner of Waxahachie; grandchildren, Bryant & Rachel Wells of West Sandy, Dale & Alice Hogue of Forney, Jamey & Karen Burnett of San Antonio, Diana & Ron Prather of Weaver & Delynn Smith of Humble; thirteen great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren & numerous nieces and nephews

Serving as pallbearers are Bryant Wells of West Sandy, Dale Hogue of Forney, Jamey Burnett of San Antonio, Chase Smith of Magnolia, Buzzy Wells of Huntsville, Cameron Wells of Houston, Austin Hogue of Forney & Jody Burnett of San Antonio.

The family would like to thank Dr. C.H. Prihoda, the Sheridan of Navasota & Compassionate Care Hospice for taking such good care of our mother and grandmother.
