Mr. W.S. "Bill" Laird, 84, of Navasota, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at College Station Medical Center. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 pm Thursday at Nobles Funeral Chapel. Funeral services are set for 10:00am Friday at First Baptist Church with Rev. Clyde Larrabee and Mr. Faber McMullen, Elder, officiating. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Navasota.
Mr. Laird was born February 4, 1925 in Houston to Benjamin and Radie (Moye) Laird, Sr. He married Betty Joy Tiller on April 7, 1946, and loved her for 63 years. He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired from the oilfield after many years. He was a Grimes County Constable, former Harris County Deputy Sheriff, and an avid Houston Oiler fan. Bill was a long time member of First Baptist Church and was a Mason, Eastern Star and a Charter Member of the Arabia Temple Motor Corp. He helped local children to attend the Shrine Circus as well as assisting cripple children to get free care at the Shriner's Cripple Children's Hospital. He loved his ranch and cattle and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Linda Laird Anderson and husband Kenneth of Willis; son, William S. "Bill" Laird, Jr. and wife Tommie Jo of White Hall; sister, Doris Henley and husband Bill of Houston; 4 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ben Laird, Jr., Thomas Laird, Harold Laird and Jimmy Laird; and sister, Rhoda Mullins.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Shriner's Hospital.
