Mr. Vernon Mitchell, 96, of Pasadena, TX passed away Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the San Jacinto Manor Nursing Home in Deer Park, TX. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, May 14, 2014 from 9:30 – 11:00 am at Nobles Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will follow immediately after, with the Rev. Larry Womack officiating. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.
Vernon was born on September 28, 1917, in Navasota, TX, the son of Wiley and Maggie Mitchell. He married Vera Hughey in Navasota on May 21, 1939. He served in the U.S. Navy – 96th N.C.B. Sea Bees from 1942 until 1945. He was stationed in the Phillippines. He has served as a Harris County Reserve Deputy Sheriff in the 1960’s. He retired from Harrison Equipment Company in 1984. He served as Past Master of Masonic Lodge 1053 in League City, TX., and served as Past Worthy Patron in the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 915, in So. Houston, TX. He was also a member of the Woodman of the World. Some 30 plus years ago, he was with a musical group called the Rhythm Wranglers and played the fiddle. He was still playing that fiddle just a few weeks ago at his nursing home for fellow residents.
Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by the love of his life, Vera,who he lost 10 months ago. They would have been married 75 years on May 21st of this year. He is also preceded by his parents; brothers, Robert, Grover and E.L. and sisters Mary, Velma and his twin, Vivian.
He is survived by son, James Mitchell and wife Glenda of Deer Park; grandchildren, Misty Bonham and husband Michael of Humble and Christy Ham and husband Jarad of La Porte; great-grandchildren Madison, Makenzie,and Matthew Bonham, Cody Saylor, and Tanner and Laurynn Ham.
Serving as pallbearers are Jarad Ham of Deer Park, Ross Mitchell of Alvin, Cody Saylor of Deer Park, Hamp Harris of Hockley and Phil Johnson of Normangee.
