Velma Franks

Velma Mary Franks, 94, of Navasota went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, October 25, 2011. Funeral services are set for 11am Friday, October 28, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church of Navasota with the Rev. C. McAllister "Mac" Vaughn and the Rev. J.K. "Tim" Bruegger officiating. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.
Velma was born in Piedmont, Texas on September 20, 1917, the daughter of John and Betty Moody. After graduating from Navasota High School in 1934, she attended John Tarleton University and graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1938 with a B.S. degree in elementary education. She taught the 3rd grade in Navasota for 12 years and retired in 1950. Velma was a loyal and faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Navasota for more than 50 years. She taught children's Sunday school and was a member of the Rachael Sunday School Class. She also served as flower chairman for the church for many years.
Additionally, Velma was a member of the Methodist Bible study class and a member of the Navasota Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, George Marvin Franks; brother, Evans Moody; and sister, Ozelle Stout.
Velma is survived by her two sons, Marvin Wayne Franks of Santa Barbara, CA and Michael Carl Franks of Dallas, TX.
Serving as pallbearers are Don Lemon, Charles Jackson, John Haynie Stoneham, Michael Moody, John Stout and Robert Lys. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. John Webb, Lloyd Pool, Bob Brewton and Kenneth Camp.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Navasota.
