Tomasa was born December 21, 1928, in Austin, TX, to Tiburcio and Ygnacia Alonzo. She spent most of her childhood caring for her mother. She later met and married the love of her life, Mr. Valeriano Melchor. To this beautiful union of sixty-plus years, three children were born: Felix, John, and Magdalena.
She enjoyed working in the yard, listening to Spanish records, going out dancing because her moves were smooth as silk. Tomasa enjoyed being a caregiver to those she loved dearly especially to her son, Johnny, who suffered with Polio at a young age. The doctors said he wouldn’t be able to walk, but through fervent prayer, faith and determination Johnny walked normal! Tomasa was a very religious person, always a regular at Sunday Mass and served her church in many roles.
Tomasa also cared and nurtured for her daughter, Magdalena, when she fell ill. She stayed with her to help with her children. As her grandkids were growing up, Tomasa enjoyed helping watch them. When Tomasa fell ill, her daughter Magdalena dropped everything and went to stay with her at the hospital until she recovered. They deeply cared for each other.
Tomasa enjoyed her regular trips to Austin to spend quality time with family, eating hamburgers, sewing, and affectionately loved her “Chepoopi” her son’s pet Chihuahua. She was known for her infectious smile and kind-spirit.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Domingo, Felipe, and Vicente Alonzo; sister, Epifania Garcia; and son-in-law, Robert Torres, Sr.
Tomasa is survived by sons, Felix Melchor & wife Evelyn and John Melchor & wife Dianna; daughter, Magdalena Torres; grandchildren, Chloe & husband Kyle Young, Darcy Melchor, Austin Melchor, Michelle Dominguez, Juan S.
