Steven David Schalit

May 11, 1951 — June 8, 2024

Hempstead, TX

Steven (Steve) David Schalit passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, June 08, 2024, with his wife, daughter, and sister by his side. He was born to Marjorie Swiss and Lester Schalit in Vallejo, California, on May 11, 1951. No public service will be held at this time. Cremation services are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.

Steve’s life revolved around his family. He met his future wife in his teens. It was love at first sight. They were married three years later. Their daughter, Traci, was born on Mother’s Day and Steve’s birthday. The family celebrated these milestones together for 49 years. Steve did his best to care for his parents as they aged. He was an avid learner. He tried to use a new word every day. Steve had many interests and businesses over the years. He began working in construction for his dad, who helped develop his strong constitution and work ethic. Steve worked at an equipment rental store, learning how to repair things. He worked at video stores and discovered an interest in floor planning as he opened new stores. Self-taught in the school of hard knocks, he could build, design, and maintain the household, but don’t try to help him. He liked to work ‘alone.’ He also worked in Real Estate, where he met Miguel Bolio. At first, they were fierce opponents, but they became fast friends and eventually worked together. Their friendship exemplified that people can have opposing and passionate views and
still be true friends. Steve was also a ‘foodie’. He loved to cook daily and for family events, collecting and creating recipes. Steve also enjoyed playing games, fishing, and boating.

Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie, and stepfather, Bud Swiss; his father, Lester, and stepmother, Tecla Schalit; and his parents-in-law, Helen and Howard Downey. He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Marguerite Schalit; daughter, Traci Schalit; sister, Susan Cyrus, and his stepsister, Shari Davis and her husband, Nathan; brothers-in-law, Mark and Sherry Downey; David and Peggy Downey; cousins; Robert and Mohanta Schalit, April Rummel, Linda Burns, Rodney and Sue Beem, Ellen and John Pelletier, Barbara Rubenstein, Carol Silverman, David and Karen Wolf, Arnold and Laura Wolf, Henrietta Wolf and Sandy Lusky. Steve’s best friend, Miguel Bolio, and his wife, Elaine, were also integral to his life.

As we say our final goodbyes to our dear friend, son, brother, father and devoted husband, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the palliative care team, cancer care team, and the financial aid department (Dallas) at Baylor Scott and White in College Station and Brenham. Your support was invaluable during Steve’s journey, and we are forever grateful. In lieu of flowers, we believe the best way to honor Steve’s memory is to contribute to Baylor Scott and White, https://ctxfoundation.bswhealth.com/ways-to-give/donate or a charity of your choice.
