Mr. Shields Prescott, Sr., 90, of Navasota, passed away Monday, August 17, 2009 at Grimes St. Joseph Regional Health Center. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 19, from 5-7pm at Nobles Funeral Chapel and funeral services are set for 10am, Thursday, August 20 at the Madeley Chapel in Oakland Cemetery with Rev. Clyde Larrabee officiating. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
Mr. Prescott was born February 12, 1919 in Navasota to Pate P. & Ruth Etta (Shields) Prescott, Jr. He was raised on the family farm in Piedmont, TX and graduated from Navasota High School in 1938. On February 27, 1941, he joined the US Army and served in Company "B" of the 53rd signal Battalion. He married Tawana Mardell Kelso in Austin on June 28, 1942. He proudly served in Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Rome, Naples, Po Valley and North Appenines, and was honorably discharged on July 29, 1945 at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio. Shortly after his discharge, he ran various family businesses, including a bulldozer land clearing business, until he purchased the family ranch in Millican. Shields also ran the Cow Talk Steakhouse after his father built the Navasota Auction Barn. In 1971 he married Betty Jane Milatovich, and was the owner of Prescott Trucking Company until his retirement. He was involved in the 4-H Club, Grimes County Youth Fair and Rodeo, VFW Activities, Navasota Lamplighters Club and Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.
He was preceded in death by his wives; parents; grandparents, Pate P Prescott, Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth (Bounds) Prescott; brothers, L.P. Prescott and Alex Guinn Prescott.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Ann Prescott of Abilene; sons & daughters-in-law, Shields & Dianne Prescott of Navasota, Gary & Jean Prescott of Ovalo, and Michael & Carolyn Prescott of Navasota; 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers will be Shields Prescott, Jr., Michael Prescott and Shane Prescott, all of Navasota; Gary Prescott of Ovalo; George Milatovich of Odessa and Greg Milatovich of Hearn.
