April 12, 1912 — July 14, 2010

Ozell Matthews Payne (Mama Payne) went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 in Navasota, TX.

Ozell was born in Whitney, TX on April 12, 1912 to Robert A. and Olla Mae Tonahill Matthews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Payne; daughters, Dorothy Payne MacDonald and Pamela Diane Payne; grandson, Thomas Marshall Hood; and brothers Garland Matthews (Helen) and Bobby Wayne Matthews.

She is survived by her daughters, Willene Payne Hood (Hollis) of Navasota, TX, Marsha Payne Byrd (James) of Angleton, TX; her brother Joseph Edwin Matthews (Patty) of Fort Worth, TX; grandsons, David MacDonald of Seattle, WA, Marshall MacDonald (Donna) of Fort Worth, TX, and Buddy Snow (Kim) of Minneapolis, MN; granddaughter, Debra Cusson (Brian) of Box Elder, SD; son-in-law, Brian MacDonald of Angleton, TX; granddaughter-in-law, Susan Hood Franz (Marvin) of Williamsburg, VA; and great-grandchildren, Liam, Meredith, Micah, Charissa, Rebecca, and Asa MacDonald, Riley and Parker Snow, Gavin, Connor and Spencer Cusson, and Thomas Hood.

Ozell's home church was Second Baptist Church, Angleton, and she faithfully attended First Baptist Church, Navasota during the last four years. She also claims Northway Baptist, Angleton as another church home. Ozell's sweet spirit has been a blessing as she served God humbly for many years by loving and helping others.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8pm friday, July 16 at Nobles Funeral Chapel and funeral services are set for 10am Saturday, July 17 at the First Baptist Church of Navasota with the Rev. Clyde Larrabee officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3pm Saturday at the Angleton Cemetery with the Rev. Chris Moore officiating.

Many Brazosport residents will remember Ozell working in the elementary lunchrooms (20 years), the Lake Jackson outdoor pool, or the Lake Jackson Recreation Center (45 years). Most cowboys know her smile from the wagon seat on trailrides during many years with Marshall.

Pallbearers include David MacDonald, Marshall MacDonald, Buddy Snow, Micah MacDonald, Gavin Cusson, and Thomas Hood. Honorary pallbearers are her Sunday School departments at all three churches.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to any of the following: Second Baptist Church Angleton Foreign Missions Offering; First Baptist Church Navasota Building Fund; or in her memory to the church of your choice.
