Mildred Byrd (Cone) Gajeske, 96, passed away peacefully at her home in Roans Prairie, TX on October 19, 2011. Funeral services are set for 10am Saturday, October 22 at Nobles Funeral Chapel with Pastor Steve Prewett officiating. A private burial will take place in the Shiro Cemetery. Friends are invited to gather at the Roans Prairie Community Center following the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.
Mildred was born in Roans Prairie on December 12, 1914, the daughter of Simeon (Sim) Taylor Cone and Dona Lois (McCune) Cone. She was proud of her Texas heritage and of her ancestors coming to the Mexican territory in 1821, but especially of her adored grandfather, T.J. McCune and his many accomplishments. She was a graduate of Navasota High School and wore her high school ring for so long that the year was rubbed off. In 1931, at the age of 17, she was crowned "Miss Grimes County", and would laugh and say she won because she flirted with the judges. At the party honoring her 90th birthday, the late county judge, James Dixon presented her with a key to the city. This one replaced the original that had burned in the fire that destroyed her childhood home.
In the early 80's when she retired from Montgomery Wards Central Credit in Houston, she came home and spent her time traveling, playing cards, seeing old friends and making new ones. She truly never met a stranger. She was a life-long member of the Shiro Methodist Church, as were her parents and grandparents, the local chapter of AARP, The Roans Prairie Community Center and the Brenham Sons of Herman Lodge.
On July 31, 1932 she married Eldon E. Gajeske of Brenham, who passed away in 1961. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Beatrice Cone; and her in-laws, Gus and Mary Belle (Durden) Gajeske of Brenham.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lois and Gerald Boatman; grandson, Russel E. Vrba; his children, Justin and Shyann, all of Roanes Prairie; grandson, Warren (Beau) Boatman, wife Susan and their children Jessica & Christopher of Albermarle, N.C., step-grandchildren, Greg Boatman of Portland, OR, Tala Parsons, Joey and Browyn Thibodeaux, all of Texas City, David and Mark Thibodeaux, and Lori Littlejohn, all of Santa Fe, and Becky Byrd of Roans Prairie. She will be dearly missed by her beloved cats, Prissy and Little Blackie.
A special thank you goes out to Louise Fernandez for the care that she has given Mildred in the past few years.
Serving as pallberers are grandsons, Rusty Vrba, Joey, Mark and David Thibodeaux, Richard Littlejohn, and great-grandson Justin Vrba and Brett Noto. Honorary pallbearers are Ronnie Floyd, Don and Ted Slayton, Bill Bay and Thomas Moore.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mildred's name to the True Blue Animal Shelter of Old Washington, PO Box 1107, Brenham, TX 77834, or the Shiro Volunteer Fire Dept at PO Box 173, Shiro, TX 77876.
