Martha Hattie “Louise” (Brinkman) Simmons was born to Fredrick and Regina (Seidel) Brinkman on December 21, 1924 in Houston, Texas during a snow storm. Louise grew up during the Great Depression which shaped her in many ways. On May 4th, 1945 she married James Donald Simmons, and the two joined into the Lutheran faith together. After getting married, her husband went to war and Louise went to work at Southern Pacific Railroad. After the war ended, Louise spent her time helping out on the family farm, as well as taking care of elderly family members. Eventually Louise got pregnant and had her only child, James Victor Simmons.
Louise experienced a lot throughout her 97 years, after her husband passed away in 1989, Louise moved to Magnolia, Texas where she spent the remainder her life.
A country girl at heart, Louise loved everything outdoors. There was nothing Louise could not do. Leveling houses, mowing, and climbing ladders, are just a few of the activities Louise loved and still tried to do until her last breath.
Over the years Louise collected a lot of extra “family members” that she claimed as her own. She is survived by her son, James Victor Simmons and his spouse, Robbie Powell; daughter, Gretchen Prieto and husband Jeff; her beloved grandchildren, Matthew Mattern and wife Emily, Joseph Mattern and wife Shelby, Timothy Mattern and wife Kourtney, and Kelsie Prieto. Most importantly her cherished great grandchildren, whom she adored, Dallas Jane, Jaime Warren, Tucker Clay, Remington Marie, Tanner Cole, and many others. Louise was “grandma” to everyone.
She was a simple woman, but is leaving behind a ton of “saved paper work and empty boxes” that her family has no idea what to do with. Louise Simmons, famous for saying, “It’s hell to get old” and “The only thing wrong with me is old age and meanness”, will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Serving as pallbearers are Matthew Mattern, Joseph Mattern, Timothy Mattern, Cody Kelley, Jessie Maybaugh, and Preston Jollisant.
Louise is proceeded in death by her husband, James Donald Simmons; parents, Fredrick and Regina; brother John Brinkman and wife Faye; her adopted son Donald, and the most important two people, her granddaughters Jessica Marie Mattern and Sierra Kay Simmons.
