Mrs. Leona (Wellmann) Lunsford, 89 of Navasota, passed away Monday, June 22nd at CHI St. Joseph College Station. Visitation with family and friends will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 pm, Wednesday, June 24th at Nobles Funeral Chapel. A private, family celebration of her life will be held at the Madeley Chapel at Oakland Cemetery with Rev. Jeremy Woodley officiating. Interment will follow in the cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Fueneral Chapel.
Leona was born on July 23, 1930 in Washington, Texas to Fritz W. Wellmann, Sr and Elenora (Buck) Wellmann. She married Billy Lunsford in Houston on January 23, 1954 and began their family shortly thereafter. The family enjoyed summer fishing vacations in Rockport or Lake Murvalle. Once the children grew up and moved out, Leola and Billy enjoyed travelling to Las Vegas a few times a year and an occassional trip to Louisiana to the casinos. Leona was active in AARP, which later became Young at Heart; her church, the Noon Lions Club and RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program). She never enjoyed being the center of attention; she much preferred taking care of all of the details behind the scenes. She was 100% vested in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always placing their needs before her own.
Left to cherish her memory are son and daughter-in-law Terry and Jackie Lunsford; daughters and sons-in-law Sandra and Robert Taylor and Carol and Michael Serres, Sr.; sisters and brother-in-law Mildred Schroeder and Minette and Johnny Grice; grandchildren Mandy Carpenter, Kimber Nichols (husband Dustin), Michael Serres, Jr (fiance Brooke Seaback), Ryan Serres (fiance Samantha Pursley) and Crystal Brak (husband John); and great-grandchildren Rayleigh, Case, Lane, Gage, Avery and Karsyn.
Serving as pallbearers are Michael Serres, Jr., Ryan Serres, Ricky Schroeder, Mark Diorio, Dustin Nichols, Christopher Naduzia and John Brak.
Mrs. Lunsford was preceded in death by her parents; husband Billy; brothers Fritz, B. H. (Bennie) and Melvin Wellmann and grandson Cory Lunsford.
