Mr. John S. Freeman, 82, of Anderson, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at his residence. The family will receive visitors from 5:00-7:00 pm Friday, March 16, at Nobles Funeral Chapel with a prayer service following at 7:00 pm. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm Saturday, March 17, at Zion Lutheran Church in Anderson with the Rev. Donald Kasper and the Rev. Dick Wuensche officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.
John was born in Field Store, TX, on July 26, 1929, to John & Mossie (Blackford) Freeman. He graduated from Magnolia High School in 1946, and attended Sam Houston State University where he earned a B.S. and a MEd. Degree. Mr. Freeman taught at Klein School before serving in the U.S. Army. He then went to teach for the Anderson I.S.D. where he was appointed superintendent in March 1957, and worked until his retirement in June 1988.
John had a passion for serving and helping others. He was a charter member of the Grimes County Lions Club, a member of the American Legion Post #640, an organizer of the Grimes County Taxpayers Association, served on the board of directors of the Grimes County Appraisal District, and worked as chairman of the Anderson Wastewater Committee. Mr. Freeman also served as mayor of Anderson from 1995-2003.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters, Frank Freeman, Roy Freeman, Shorty Freeman, Della Chauvin, Dean Thacker, Grace Trigg, James Freeman, and Billy Freeman.
Mr. Freeman is survived by his wife Erna M. Freeman; daughter and son-in-law, Debra & Jim Andrews of Sugar Land; and grandchildren, Elizabeth & Grace Andrews.
Serving as pallbearers are Ron Freeman of Beaumont, Zelte Edwards of Houston, Frank Rosenquist of Navasota, Warren Wood, Bill Boehm, Tommy Scymczak, and Marshall Calhoun, all of Anderson. Honorary pallbearers include Dwight Thacker, Tom Trigg, Stan Trigg, George Rodenbusch, Bobby Chauvin, Tom Payne, Gerard Scymczak, Eric Szymczak, F.D. Calhoun, Dr. John C. Webb, and Chico Godfrey.
