Mr. Joe W. Doby, 85, of Washington, passed away Sunday, March 14 at the Grimes St. Joseph Health Center in Navasota. Visitation will be from 6-8pm Tuesday, March 16 at Nobles Funeral Chapel, 402 E. Blackshear, Navasota, TX. Graveside services will be held 10am Wednesday at the Houston National Cemetery with full military and Masonic services, and a memorial service is set for 2pm Wednesday, at the First Presbyterian Church of Navasota with Rev. Fred Seay officiating.
Joe was born the descendent of a pioneer family that settled in Dobyville, AR, on September 11, 1924 to Paul and Ethel (Boyce) Doby. He graduated from Okalona High School, and was a corporal in the U.S.M.C. as a scout sniper during World War II. He also served in the South Pacific on Guam and Iwo Jima, and was honorably discharged in 1945. He then received his bachelors degree from Oklahoma State University, and his masters degree from Texas A&M University. He began his career as a county agent with Texas Agriculture Extension Service, where he retired after 35 years. He and his wife, Mary, moved to Washington-on-the-Brazos, where they operated a pecan orchard for 15 years. He was a mason, and a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Bess (Thomson) Doby; 2nd wife, Anna (Cain) Doby; brothers, Paul & Jack Doby; and sisters, Altie Gannaway & Beth Ancell.
He is survived by his sons, George Doby of Cleburne, Carl Doby of Houston, and Jim & wife Brenda Doby of Tomball; and grandchildren, Joe, Justin & Tabitha Doby.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Navasota.
