Jim Adkins, 71 of Navasota, passed away Saturday, June 13th at his home. Visitation with family and friends will be held from 9:00 - 10:30am, Thursday, June 18th at Union Grove Baptist Church in Richards. A celebration of his life will follow at 10:30 am, officiated by Rev. Macallister "Mac" Vaughn and Rev. Ed Kucera. Interment will follow in Pool Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.
Jim was born on March 16, 1949. He was adopted and raised in Houston, Texas. Jim graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1968. He served honorably in the United States Army, reaching the rank of Private First Class. He married Helen Calderon in 1973. They had one son, Randy Adkins. Although the two divorced nine years later, they remained friends for the remainder of his life. Jim worked in the transportation industry from the mid 1970’s through the late 1990’s. Around 1993, Jim moved to Bedias, Texas in northern Grimes County. In 1998, he began a new career as a Jailer with the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office. Over the next 22 years, Jim worked in the jail as a floor officer, Corporal, Sergeant and Jail Administrator. He spent the majority of his career as a Sergeant handling court related business for the jail. Jim was a beloved fixture of the staff at the Sheriff’s Office and also those involved in the Grimes County judicial system. “Jim at the jail” was the go-to person when you had a problem or needed something, and everyone knew this.
He is survived by his son, Randy Adkins; grandson, Anthony Adkins; sisters Melissa Ferguson and her husband Gary and Sue DeWig, along with several nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers are Anthony Adkins, Brian Aokes, Greg Bergeron, Blake Jarvis, James Ellis, Blake Baldobino, Travis Hughey and John Wren.
Jim was preceded in death by his adoptive parents; his biological father Hal Pitman and brother Van Pitman
