James Kolkhorst

James Henry "Bubba" Kolkhorst passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2010. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. at Friedens Church of Washington, UCC, 20301 FM 1155 East in Washington, Texas, with Pastors George Klett and Ora Lee Roberson officiating.
Interment will follow at the Friedens Cemetery in Old Washington.
James was born on May 24, 1935, in Old Washington, the son of Ted and Mabel (Buck) Kolkhorst. After graduation from Brenham High School in 1953, he attended Blinn College where he played baseball for the Buccaneers. After Blinn, he attended the University of Houston and Sam Houston State University where he earned a Bachelors of Business Administration.
On Oct. 7, 1961, James married Vivian Weghorst at Friedens Church of Washington, UCC.
James served in the Army Reserves in the late 1950's and early 1960's. During the Berlin Crisis of 1961, he served 9 months on active duty.
Before active duty, James served as the assistant manager of J.C. Penney in Navasota. After returning home, he joined his father in the dairy business. While a dairy farmer, he also worked as a driver for the Exxon Bulk Plant in Navasota. In 1971, James was named the consignee for the Navasota Bulk Plant and ultimately founded Kolkhorst Petroleum in 1981.
James served in many community roles including multiple terms on the Friedens Church of Washington, UCC Council, board member of the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park Association, lifelong member of the church choir and past Washington Volunteer Fireman.
Most important in his life was his family. He loved spending time with Vivian, his children and grandchildren. James had an incredible love for the outdoors. Much of his retirement was spent deer hunting and working at the family farms.
James was preceded in death by his parents and his mother and father-in-law, Ann and Arnold Weghorst.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian; daughter, Kathy Pawlowski and husband, Steve, of Bellville; son, Jim Kolkhorst and wife, Lois of Brenham; grandchildren, Dane, Eden and Drake Pawlowski; Lois Kate and Jake Kolkhorst; sister, Margaret Demuth and husband Henry of Houston; brothers, T.C. Kolkhorst and wife, Maria of Wimberly; and Don Kolkhorst of Navasota; sister-in-law, Flora Mason of Navasota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers are Randy Buck, Mark Demuth, Mark Finke, Don Kolkhorst, Todd Kolkhorst, Dane Pawlowski, Steve Pawlowski and Frank Zaragosa. Honorary pallbearers are Shim Dickschat, Danny Meekins, Dan Mohr, Sonny Pawlowski, Walter Schroeder and Wallace Bosse.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, at Nobles Funeral Chapel, 402 E. Blackshear, Navasota.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Nobles Funeral Chapel.
