Flora Estes, 82, of Houston died Friday, April 20, 2007. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24 at Nobles Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Darrell Nunley, Pastor Emeritus officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation is from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.
She was born on May 13, 1924, in Hondo, Texas, daughter of Charlie & Bernarda Estes.
Ms. Estes graduated from A& M Consolidated High School and entered the nurses training program at Methodist Hospital where she became a registered nurse. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Houston. During her career she served as head nurse of neurology at Methodist Hospital and scrubbed for doctors DeBakey and Cooley. She was also a private duty nurse and an industrial nurse and retired in 1986 from H.I.S.D after serving 30 years at several elementary schools. After her retirement she traveled, and served on the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo First Aide Committee.
Ms. Estes will always be remembered for her big smile and friendly way of offering advice and information to anyone who would listen. She often referred to herself as a "walking encyclopedia" just looking for a place to share her knowledge.
Ms. Estes was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie & Bernarda Estes; her brothers, Willie Estes, Charles Estes, Jr., and Robert Estes
Ms. Estes is survived by her brother, Sam Estes of Hempstead, Texas; brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry & Juanita Estes of Memphis, Tennessee, Jack & Bobette Estes of Barrington, Illinois; sister-in-law, Esther Estes of Houston, Texas; nieces Ruthie, Karen, Stephanee, Ellise, and Susan; nephew Tim and all of their families.
The family wishes to express deep appreciation to the VNA and three of Ms. Estes' special caregivers, Mrs. Nancy Rogers, Mrs. Lou Phanor, and Mrs. Margaret Strange-Luchin.
