Mr. Douglas R. McVey, 67, of Anderson, passed away Saturday, September 19, 2009 at the V.A. Hospital in Temple after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 22 at Nobles Funeral Chapel from 5-8pm with a prayer service at 7pm. Funeral services will be held at 2pm Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Dan Schoessow officiating. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Navasota.
Douglas was born April 2, 1942 in Lacrosse, WI to Fred Elmo & Ava Arlene (Stroade) McVey. After graduating from the Fishburne Military Academy in Virginia, Douglas enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1962. He served two tours in Vietnam on a medivac helicopter. Douglas worked a variety of jobs after being discharged from the Army, mainly as a truck driver and owner of his trucking company. On September 20, 1997, Douglas married Nadine Roese at Friedens Church UCC in Washington. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and a member of the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Group in College Station. His favorite hobby was restoring classic cars.
Mr. McVey was preceded in death by his parents, Fred & Ava McVey.
Survivors include his wife, Nadine Roese McVey of Anderson; daughters, Dana Wagner & husband Darrell of Anderson, Jana Summers & husband David of La Mesa, CA, and Jamie Howell & husband Jim of Brownwood; sons, Randy Roese of Anderson, Shawn McVey & partner Brian Upp of Phoenix, AZ, Shane McVey & wife Lisa of Eau Claire, WI, and Chad McVey & wife Mary Kay of Menomonie, WI; sister, Dr. June Goodall & husband Dr. David Goodall of Houston; uncle, Richard Stroade & wife Marsha of Manhattan, KS; "adopted daughters", Annette Bumgard of Plantersville & Simone Smith of Iola; brothers-in-law, Bubba Roese, John Roese, & Don Roese, all of Washington; sisters-in-law, Joyce Walkoviak of Houston, Nancy Swank of Navasota, & Susie Nolan of Liberty; grandchildren, Daylen & Drew Wagner, Destiny & Josh Summers, McKenna & Brynn McVey, Samantha Lewis, Conner McVey, Kayley McVey, and Jake & Leslie Howell; great-grandson, Lucas Michael Dallenbach; mothers of his children, Glenda Browning of Phoenix, AZ & Sharon Sabatke of Bangs, TX; and his loving dogs, Two Bits & Tinker.
Serving as pallbearers are Vietnam Veterans Larry Motley, Isiah Lovings, Conrad Pauling, & Al Diaz, all of Bryan, Floyd Bennett of Madisonville, Jackie Jernigan of Keith, & Lavon Thompson of Tunis.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System, or the Hospice Brazos Valley.
