Dorothy Juanita “Nita” Burnett, 84, of Houston, passed away Friday, October 4, at her home. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 12, in Lee Cemetery in Walker County. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.
Nita was born in Richards, TX, on August 29, 1940, to Charles “Red” Hogue and Zelma Juanita (Harman) Hogue, and she always thought of Richards as her family. She worked at many places, starting at Huntsville Memorial Hospital, Dr. Frank Vickers, Texas Department of Corrections, Sam Houston State University and Region VI Education Service Center. She married Richard Galvin Smith in 1982, and they moved to Houston where she went to work at Region IV Education Service Center. She then worked at Wildseed Farms and Houston Baptist University. She later retired from Houston Christian High School in 2006 and felt blessed to retire from her favorite job ever.
Nita and Richard were able to travel to Hawaii three times, several times to Mexico, Canada’s east and west coast, Seattle and San Francisco (when it was still beautiful and safe). They went to Sun Valley, Idaho and Charleston, SC several times and to New Orleans in 1984 to the World’s Fair. They went on many cruises and several trips to Las Vegas, the last time for their granddaughter Ashley’s wedding to Kevin. She traveled to England for her grandson Jody’s first birthday as well as Japan with her granddaughter Ashley. Nita went on many trips with her “Huntsville Bunch” girlfriends, her sister Lynda, and her niece Delynn Decatur.
She was preceded in death by her son Jody Glynn Burnett in 1963 at the age of 3 ½; her parents; and her husband’s parents, Jerry & Sissy Smith.
Left to cherish her memories are her husband of over 42 years, Richard Galvin Smith, son Jamey Glynn Burnett and daughter-in-law Karen; Jamey’s daughter Ashley Burnett Montejano (Kevin) and their sons Jace and Atticus; Jamey’s son Jody Christopher Burnett (Morgan Townes) and their twin sons Jody, Jr. (JJ) and Thomas (Tommy); Morgan’s children, Chloe and Ethan; Karen’s son Antonio Marlin Miguez, IV (TJ) and her daughter Savannah Claire Burnett (she changed her name legally to Burnett for her 21st birthday – happy day!); brother Charles Dale Hogue and his children and grandchildren; sister Lynda Wells and her children and grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Grant & Marilyn Smith and their daughter Traci & Rick Morris; many cousins whom she loved dearly; and many friends, The Thursday Afternoon Business Meeting Group (The Huntsville Bunch), and her Houston Baptist University (HBU) girlfriends.
