David George Gast, 85, of Stoneham, passed away Tuesday, October 27th at St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan, Texas. Visitation with family and friends will be 6:00 – 8:00pm Friday, October 30th at Nobles Funeral Chapel. A Funeral Mass to celebrate his life will be held at 10:00am, Saturday, October 31st at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stoneham with Rite of Committal to follow in the church cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel.
David was born on April 21, 1930 in Flatonia, Texas to Lorenz and Albina (Simcik) Gast. He was one of twelve children. He proudly served his beloved country as a Corporal in the U. S. Army in World War II and the Korean War and was a current member of the Navasota VFW Post 4006. Shortly after his honorable discharge he met and married the love of his life, Dorothy Kurtz on October 23, 1954. The couple moved to Houston to raise their family. He was an HVAC Technician for many years and then retired from Katy I.S.D and moved to Stoneham. David loved the outdoors; hunting, fishing, gardening and watching wildlife from his front porch. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stoneham. One of his greatest joys was playing cards with his family. His favorite saying while playing cards was “we’re burning daylight”. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Dorothy; three daughters and sons-in-laws Deborah and Don Lafitte of Navasota; Donna and Dennis Zatopek of Bryan; and Diane and Mike O’Dell of Montgomery; sister Martha Callahan of Katy; grandchildren Deena McClure and husband Norman ; Ashleigh O’Dell; Kenneth LaFitte and wife Mary; and Linda LaFitte Nelson and husband Mike; ten great-grandchildren that he loved dearly; and his canine companion, Sheba.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Annie Pospisil, Rosalie McMillian and Stella Baker; seven brothers, Anton, Paul, Emil, Frank, Leroy, Pete and Jim Gast.
