Bill Herod

August 24, 1926 — February 25, 2011

Bill E. Herod, 84, of Navasota was called home to be with the Lord on February 25, 2011. The family will receive visitors from 5-8pm Tuesday, March 1 at Nobles Funeral Chapel. Funeral services are set for 10:30am Wednesday, March 2 at the First Baptist Church of Navasota with the Rev. Clyde Larrabee officiating. Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
Bill was born on August 24, 1926 in Corsicana to E.C. & May Bell Herod. After graduating high school and serving a short stint in the U.S. Navy, he began working in the highway construction industry. In 1952 he partnered with Hugh Holland and started Acme Bridge Company, Inc. in Austin, Texas. The next several decades were spent traveling throughout central and south Texas building roads and bridges for TXDOT. Bill, with his wife, Martha, settled in Navasota, TX where they raised their family and became very active with First Baptist Church and in numerous civic organizations. He was a former mayor of Navasota as well as serving several terms as a city council board member. He was a proud member of the Associated General Contractors of America and received a Lifetime Member Award in 2008. Bill's greatest passions were hunting, ranching and the great outdoors. He loved being with his family and friends at the family ranch in South Texas. He received several Wildlife Management Awards honoring his stewardship of the land and wildlife. He will be remembered for his work ethic, honest and humble ways and most importantly for being a leader, mentor and wonderful Christian example to so many people from all walks of life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Martha; brother, Marvin Herod; and grandson, William Kurt Callahan.
Survivors include his daughters & son-in-law, Lyn Herod of Garland, and Melisa & Bill Callahan of Houston; son & daughter-in-law, Mark & Anne Herod of New Braunfels; sister & brother-in-law, Haunara & Johnny Coleman of Victoria; grandchildren, Clint & Lindsey Herod of Bridgeport, CT, Clay Herod of Austin, Amy Herod of New Braunfels, and Megan Callahan & Cody Callahan, both of Houston.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Family Life Center Fund at the First Baptist Church in Navasota.
