Bertie Lee Bennett, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2009, in Flagstaff, AZ. She was born Bertie Lee Dean on December 14, 1915, in Iola, TX. She was 93.
Bertie Lee was raised in Iola and graduated from Iola High School. She married her husband Virgil O'Neal Bennett on December 24th, 1936. They were married 68 wonderful years. She accompanied Virgil to San Diego during WWII while he served in the Navy. They returned to Freeport, TX after the war, where they raised two sons, Neal and Kenneth. She and Virgil retired to Iola where they developed many loving friends and were life long members of Enon Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband and son, Kenneth. She is survived by son Neal (wife Cheryl) of Fountain Valley, CA. Sisters, Jean Wornat of Houston, and Betty Hunt of Longview, TX. Brother, Billy Dean (wife Barbara) of Tyler, TX. Mimi, as she was affectionately called, is also survived by granddaughters Shelly Bethke (husband Glenn) and Jennifer Payne (husband Terry) all of Flagstaff, AZ. Grandsons Troy (wife Jennifer) of Friendswood, TX, and Justin (wife Courtney) of Cypress, TX. Great-Granddaughters, Courtney, Mckenzie, Shelby and Emma. Great-Grandsons Tyler, Jakob, Aaron, Collin and Cameron.
With Bertie Lee's willingness to please she was willing and able to travel from Houston to Flagstaff, AZ this past November to be near her granddaughters. She did this via motor home and requested sitting up most of the way in order to view the countryside that she hadn't seen in many years. She turned 93 while in Flagstaff; saw her first snow in 32 years; saw her first bull elk and was able to hold and love her new twin great-grandsons. Her passing leaves a huge void in the hearts and lives of all her family and friends but we take solace that she is with her loving husband and son Kenneth. She is safe in god's loving arms.
Services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, February 7th at Enon Baptist Church in Iola, TX with Brother Larry Andrews officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5pm-7pm, Friday, February 6th at Nobles Funeral Chapel, in Navasota, TX.
Interment will follow the services on Saturday at Zion Cemetery in Iola, tx.
